#120 Web TV: How To Hit Over A Bunker

Here's How To Hit Over A Bunker When Playing Golf

How can we hit over the bunker really confidently and know that once we have played the shot, that it is going to go over the bunker and onto the green?

That’s what you are going to learn today.

What we are going to be talking about and what I am going to show you is a way in which you can overcome the feeling of making a mistake and allowing the ball to come up over the bunker.

Firstly, I want to ask you a question.

Do you actually go out on the golf course and practice hitting shots over the bunker?

I know a lot of people don’t.

When they come out and play on the golf course they expect to be able to do it. There is the fear of trying to get the ball over the bunker, they panic and try to flick it up with their wrists and it doesn’t work. Then they hit it into the bunker and it takes a couple of shots out of the bunker and then they get it onto the green and then take a couple of putts.

There are a lot of wasted shots!

If you spent some time and actually came out and stood behind the bunker and worked on overcoming that fear and also work on this technique that I’m going to show you. It’s something simple.

Now, regardless of whether the ball goes over the bunker or not, this is what I want you to do. You need to build confidence in the actual shot. It’s a really simple thing to do. When you come through I want you to hold your position as long as possible. That’s it. Let the ball do the work off the club face, you don’t have to flick it up and try to make it work.

All I want you to do here is to get set, go back, through and hold. That’s all you have to focus on.

You can have a look and see where the ball has gone after you have played your shot but do not look up as you play the shot.

Back, through, hold. It’s feeling good, you can feel and see the ball popping up. That’s all that you need to be focusing on right now, building that confidence with the actual shot.

Don’t go, oh my God, the bunker and I have to try and find a way to get it up. You have to stay down through the ball, swing back, through and hold.

What I want you to do there is to do as many shots as you can until you have ingrained it. The next stage is then obviously working out the swing length so that the ball lands and stays on the green but the first thing is to get it over.

Come out onto the golf course, or if you have access to a chipping green that has a bunker, stand on the other side of the bunker and work on the position of just holding. It doesn’t matter where the ball ends up, just stage one or phase one, whatever you want to call it, make sure you are staying down and hitting through the shot.

Hope you enjoyed this tip and I hope you got a lot of value out of today's video.

Have an absolutely awesome day, take care, and remember; tee it high and let it fly.
